Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)

  • Distance: ~8 km | Time: 4–5 hrs

  • Habitat: Montane Forest
    Activities:

  • Drive from Moshi/Arusha to Marangu Gate (registration & briefing)

  • Begin trek through lush rainforest

  • Overnight at Mandara Hut


Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

  • Distance: ~12 km | Time: 6–8 hrs

  • Habitat: Moorland
    Activities:

  • Hike through forest into moorland zone

  • See Maundi Crater (optional detour)

  • Stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks

  • Overnight at Horombo Hut


Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

  • Altitude: 3,720m
    Activities:

  • Short hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m) or Mawenzi Ridge for acclimatization

  • Return to Horombo for rest and preparation

  • Overnight at Horombo Hut


Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

  • Distance: ~10 km | Time: 5–7 hrs

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Activities:

  • Hike past “Last Water Point”

  • Trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo

  • Early dinner and rest before summit push

  • Overnight at Kibo Hut


Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut

  • Distance: ~6 km up / ~16 km down | Time: 12–15 hrs

  • Habitat: Arctic (summit), Moorland (descent)
    Activities:

  • Midnight start for summit attempt

  • Pass Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and Stella Point (5,756m)

  • Reach Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa

  • Descend to Horombo Hut for overnight


Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Arusha/Moshi

  • Distance: ~20 km | Time: 6–7 hrs

  • Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest
    Activities:

  • Final descent through the rainforest

  • Collect summit certificates at the gate

  • Drive back to Moshi or Arusha for hotel drop-off
