5 Days Marangu Route

Hut Accommodation

Unlike other routes, trekkers stay in cozy huts instead of tents, offering better protection from the elements.

Gentle Gradient:

The trail has a more gradual incline, making it accessible to hikers with moderate fitness levels.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)

• Distance: ~8 km | Time: 4–5 hrs

• Habitat: Montane Forest
  Activities:

• Transfer from Arusha/Moshi to Marangu Gate

• Register, meet your guide, and start the trek

• Hike through rainforest with a chance to see colobus monkeys

• Overnight at Mandara Hut

Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

• Distance: ~12 km | Time: 6–8 hrs

• Habitat: Moorland
  Activities:

• Hike through rainforest and into open moorland

• View of Mawenzi Peak and the vast plateau

• Optional detour to Maundi Crater for scenic views

• Overnight at Horombo Hut

Day 3: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

• Distance: ~10 km | Time: 5–7 hrs

• Habitat: Alpine Desert
  Activities:

• Long trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks

• Early dinner and full rest at Kibo Hut before summit night

• Prepare for midnight ascent

Day 4: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut

• Distance: ~6 km up / ~16 km down | Time: 12–14 hrs

• Habitat: Arctic (summit), Moorland (descent)
  Activities:

• Start around midnight for summit attempt

• Pass Gilman’s Point and Stella Point

• Reach Uhuru Peak – the highest point in Africa

• Celebrate, take photos, then descend to Horombo Hut

Day 5: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Return to Arusha/Moshi

• Distance: ~20 km | Time: 6–7 hrs

• Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest
  Activities:

• Final descent through lush forest

• Collect your certificate at the gate

• Transfer to hotel for rest and celebration
